Those of us that have studied abroad know that there are all sorts benefits that come from taking classes in another country, but not everyone realizes that the experiences you have over there can also be very beneficial in the professional world. Study abroad can be a highly impressive addition to put on a resume, if it is done in the right way.
It’s all about what activities get highlighted and describing those with the right “enhancement” words. For example, you may not want to mention that a good deal of your time studying in London was spent in pubs cheering for the Arsenal. Instead, you may want to either leave that part out completely, or reword it to make it sound like a truly eye-opening cultural experience! 😉
And of course there are other things that should definitely not be left off the resume, such as language skills that may have been gained, classes and field trips that may directly apply to your career path, any teaching and other work you may have done, and the list really goes on and on. The key is just making sure that it gives a positive boost to your resume, so if you think a certain activity from your journey applies to the job you want, then it probably should be included.
Another great aspect gained from going abroad is that usually the skills picked up there are unique and valuable enough that they can oftentimes be brought up again on later resumes, unlike some items that will get pushed off as time goes by. But of course studying, interning or working abroad doesn’t have to stop after college either! I will be writing a separate post on that sometime very soon!
